MSP In CCTV Call To Government Minister

Local SNP MSP Stewart Stevenson has written to Communities Minister Malcolm Chisholm on the failure of a funding bid to provide CCTV units for Fraserburgh and Peterhead.

The bid by Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership for funding from the Government’s “Scottish Business Crime Centre” was rejected recently.

Mr Stevenson said:

"I have long been a vocal advocate of a street drinking ban ever since I went out on patrol with the local bobbies on a Saturday night. I heard at first hand how bottles taken out of pubs often end up being used as missiles against shop windows.

"Aberdeenshire Council have historically been reluctant to introduce a street drinking ban but eventually came round to the idea if it could be linked to the use of CCTV as a means of identifying culprits and deterring others. I am therefore bitterly disappointed that the council's bid for funding for mobile CCTV cameras should have been rejected.

"I have taken the matter up with the Communities Minister in the Scottish Executive seeking details of why the bid was rejected so that any difficulties can be addressed for future. In addition, I am seeking details of further funding opportunities and details of other possible sources of funding for this in order that the two towns can benefit from what is the norm in many other towns and cities across Scotland."
