Stevenson On "Knife Crime"

SNP REVEAL NUMBER OF UNDER-18'S CONVICTED OF CARRYING KNIVES DOUBLED IN LAST DECADE

SNP Deputy Justice Spokesperson Stewart Stevenson MSP today (Thursday) called for the Labour and Lib Dem Government to crack down on the knife culture which is plaguing Scotland's streets, after figures revealed in a Parliamentary Answer showed that the number of under-18's convicted of illegally carrying knives and other weapons has more than doubled in the last decade.

Mr Stevenson said:

"While we welcome that those carrying offensive weapons are being convicted and punished, the fact that the number of under-18s being convicted of carrying knives has more than doubled in last decade is extremely worrying.

"The SNP supports doubling the maximum sentence for knife offences and raising the legal age to buy a knife to 18, however such actions must be coupled with moves to eradicate the knife culture which is plaguing Scotland's streets.

"Ministers must do more than talk tough on this issue. The scourge of knife crime has blighted Scotland for too long, and will only be tackled when we take tough action against young people carrying knives."
